Do you love feedback? We may assume ‘Yes’, because we all want to learn and grow. However, the challenge is that we all have another, deeper human need – to feel competent and be accepted for who we are. Feedback often destroys that! Feedback uniquely sits at the intersection of two very deep and conflicting human needs – to grow and to be accepted.
Some cool things about contemporary feedback practices I found:
1. People are poor at GIVING feedback – and that will never change. Instead, we should focus on teaching people how to RECEIVE feedback – after all, it’s in their own interest to distill and leverage it for their growth
2. “Will you staff Jane Doe again on your project” – is one of the most powerful but underused feedback question
3. People are genuinely open to feedback only when THEY ask for it themselves
My favorite feedback implementation? Zoom – immediate and simple!
